The Gruesome horrors of slave trade
The Gruesome horrors of slave trade
Hello guys, this is your friendly neighbourhood writer here to bring up this befuddling topic about slavery in this our modern era so called the jet age... or is the computer age now??.. i am no longer sure which. And yes, before you do ask me, i am particularly eyeing Libya and their recent dive into the dark dingy realms of slave trade.
It kinda surprises me till now to find out that slave trade was actually once a thing, i mean who does that. Why would anyone wanna enslave another fellow human being and turn them into objects to be treated like beasts or commodities. Well, i guess that is what is meant by the saying that there is a difference between human being and being human.
now what started this whole issue appears to be a video of men being sold in Libya for $400 which shocked the world and focused international attention on this exploitation. Apparently all corners of the globe were so shocked by this that the leaders of certain African and European nations had to take action to stop the abuse. According to the facts, Libya is the main transit point for refugees and migrants trying to reach Europe by sea.
Libya is a sovereign state in the Maghreb region of Africa, bordered by the Mediterranean sea to the north, Egypt to the east, Sudan to the southeast, Chad and Niger to the south and Algeria and Tunisia to the west. Apparently 150,000 people have made the dangerous crossing across the Mediterranean sea from Libya in each of the last three years. 3,000 out of these numbers have died for four years in a row while attempting the journey, according to figures from the international organization for migration (iom). The crack down on boats smuggling refugees and migrants by the Libyan coast guards has seen to estimates of 400,000 to 1,000,000 people being bottled up in Libya in several detention camps set across the nation. This has led to high amounts of crimes such as robbery, murder and yes, rape, among migrants not to mention other abuses. Well now it seems that dramatically enough as if that hell of a horrifying ordeal was not enough, slave trade has also been added to the list with human beings, fellow human beings for crying out loud being carted off like common commodities in the overrun detention camps.
Just imagine a fellow human being like you being sold off as labourers in slave auctions; to be bought, used and discarded as others deem fit. I wonder sometimes when Africans complain of racial injustice when something like this is happening right in our own back yard. How do we as Africans expect ”white man” to treat us as equals.. as normal human beings.. when we don’t even treat our own brethren right??. An African being maltreated and sold by another African, and yet there are such outcries as racism from the lips of those same Africans. I guess it is true when they say that the world has gone to the dogs, because for this to still be occurring in this modern 21st century, at this time and era, it means that things have really deteriorated.
Well, all in all on the bright side of things, the world leaders are actually trying to put an end to this whole ruckus. Some nations have recalled their ambassadors from Libya. A summit was held on Wednesday 3oth of November by African and European leaders at the ivory coast and an urgent evacuation plan was agreed on. Most of the migrants will be sent back to their home countries. Already the Nigerian president muhammadu buhari has flown out 242 nigerian migrants back to Nigeria after expressing his shocked disbelief as to how his compatriots were being treated “like goats”. This is a promising sign in itself that this whole brouhaha will soon be nipped at the bud before it festers into something wholly unethical.
A warning to the general public has been put out to disregard most information on social media feigning to offer jobs as these are mostly hoaxes. The migrants now trapped in Libya were people looking for greener pastures who unfortunately ended up on the wrong side of life and unwittingly played into the hands of these smugglers who are now exploiting them.
My opinion personally, don’t believe everything you read on social media, and don’t be naive enough to full prey to their scams. That is how they get you. You can make it anywhere you are. There are no dream lands where everything is easy. So look inwards to your own nation and think of ways of making it there cause you surely can. After all, where there is a will there is a way.
A word is enough for the wise so don’t be fooled peeps. Signing out y’all, peace.
