UNIBEN PROTEST AND THE AFTERMATH.
On the 23rd
of November, 2017 a message was circulated to various group chats indicating
that there would be a “peaceful demonstration” of students in campus in
response to:
- · Increment in hostel maintenance fee.
- Increment in school charges for new students.
- Increment in transfer fee.
- Nonpayment of work study students.
- Increment of price of bread on campus and poor quality of Uniben bread and other services provided by the school.
- Poor state of the halls of residence.

A lot of peeps may sound like “we
heard this already” but not to worry lets follow it as every road leads
somewhere. The demonstrations as peaceful as peaceful as ever was carried out
on the 24th of November, 2017. The senate in its emergency meeting ordered
an evacuation of students from hostels for “security reasons”. One would wonder
how a peaceful protest could threaten security.
Thereafter,
there was no power and water supply in the hostels all in a bid to ensure
evacuation, this didn’t suffice, and they went further to threaten to lock
hostels.

Let me summarize this epistle to
you:- students protested, they were aggrieved and decided to seek a remedy to
it protesting peacefully, the management saw it as a threat and decided to send
them packing.
Sadly buildings
were commissioned and a new mask erected in front of the auditorium, hostels
have become dungeons of diseases, rooms infested with bedbug , surroundings
inhabited by rats, grounds reeking of urine, walls painted by toothpaste, roofs
pumping water and yet over twenty thousand is expected from us for a corner.
As we journey
home, the fight for what’s right continues, we are decision makers too we have
a voice of our own and until it’s heard we won’t stop.
Greatest Uniben Students !!!
A luta continua. vitória
é
certa
(The struggle continues. Victory is
certain)
